About Green-to-Clean
What Is Green-to-Clean?
Green-to-clean is a one-time restoration service that brings a green, cloudy, or neglected pool back to clear, balanced, swim-ready water. Unlike routine weekly cleaning, which maintains an already-healthy pool, green-to-clean is a recovery process for a pool that has lost the battle with algae. It is intensive, chemistry-driven work — not simply a deeper version of a normal cleaning.
Why Pools Turn Green
A pool turns green when sanitizer levels drop and algae take over. This usually follows a stretch without service, a failed or undersized pump, a clogged filter, or heavy debris that overwhelms the water. Once algae bloom, the water can shift from slightly hazy to deep green in just a few days.
The Green-to-Clean Process
Every recovery is sized to how far gone the water is, but the process generally follows these steps:
- Assess the water and equipment, and remove large debris from the surface and floor
- Test and correct the chemistry foundation, especially pH and alkalinity, so treatment can work
- Shock the pool with a heavy dose of sanitizer to kill the algae
- Run the filtration system continuously to capture dead algae, cleaning or backwashing the filter as it loads up
- Brush the walls and floor repeatedly to break algae loose
- Add clarifier or flocculant if needed to help fine particles filter out
- Re-test and fine-tune chemistry until the water is clear and balanced
What to Expect
Most recoveries take anywhere from one to several days depending on severity, water temperature, and filter capacity. Severe cases — black algae, stained plaster, or water too far gone to clear chemically — may call for a drain and acid wash instead, which is a separate surface-restoration service. Once your pool is clear, the best way to protect that investment is regular weekly maintenance so it never gets back to green.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to drain the pool? Usually no. Most green pools can be cleared chemically. Draining is reserved for the most severe cases or when the surface itself needs restoration.
How long until I can swim? Often within a few days of starting, once sanitizer settles back into a safe range and the water is clear and balanced.
Will it turn green again? Not if it is maintained. Green pools are almost always the result of interrupted service or a circulation problem.
